Methodology

Every figure on FundVersus comes from a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. This page lists each source, what it supplies, how often it updates, and every figure FundVersus computes rather than copies.

What FundVersus computes

These figures are labeled as computed wherever they appear.

  • Annualized returns compound monthly N-PORT returns over the trailing 12, 36 and 60 months. Calendar-year figures are compounded the same way from prospectus returns, and they reproduce the average annual returns table in the prospectus.
  • Volatility is the standard deviation of the last 36 monthly returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
  • Largest drawdown is the biggest fall from a month-end peak to a later month-end value in the available record, which starts in late 2019.
  • Holdings overlap adds up, for every stock held by both funds, the smaller of its two weights. Two S&P 500 funds overlap by about 100%.
  • Effective number of holdings is 1 divided by the sum of squared weights. It shows how concentrated a portfolio is.
  • Category medians and ranks compare each fund with the other funds in its category, counting one share class per fund.
  • Company margins and growth are computed from reported revenue, income and cash flow for the latest fiscal year.
  • Company market value multiplies shares outstanding from the latest 10-K or 10-Q cover by the median per-share value funds reported for the stock on N-PORT at the same quarter end. It is not a live market capitalization.

Categories and sectors

FundVersus assigns each fund to one category using its holdings mix, its N-CEN answers, its money market category, its prospectus strategy and its name. These are FundVersus categories. They are not Morningstar, Lipper or GICS classifications. Stock sectors group SEC industry (SIC) codes into eleven sectors.

Rankings

Every list ranks by one stated measure. FundVersus does not publish an overall score or a rating, and a higher rank is not a recommendation.

Which pages are published

A page is listed for search engines only when its data is complete and current: an active fund with a fee table and recent holdings, or a company with recent annual financial statements. Pages for small, closed or incomplete entries still work but are marked noindex.

Known limits

  • Holdings lag. The SEC releases N-PORT reports about 60 days after each quarter ends.
  • There is no market price feed. Returns are as reported by funds, and company market values are estimates from fund filings.
  • Filings contain errors. When a filed value is clearly mis-tagged, such as a return below -100%, FundVersus drops it rather than guessing, and the page shows it as not reported.
